Resources

This resource page is intended to compile the resources we as a community of family and friends have acquired. If you or someone you know is facing similar circumstances, we hope this information will provide them with some support and guidance. This is not professional advice, the below resources are drawn from our personal experience searching for Juan.

Where should I search?

Compile a list of all hospitals, jails, and homeless shelters in your area including their address, website, and phone number. Call each location and ask for individuals held or admitted matching the description and identification of your loved one.

For hospitals and jails, check if any "John Does" have been admitted or detained with your loved ones description.

If you have not found your loved one in a week or more, visit the locations in person and distribute flyers with your contact information included so on-duty personnel can see your loved one. Take note of the person you speak with and their contact number so you can call and check-in every day.

Who can support me?

Submit a missing person's report with your local police station as soon as possible. If your missing loved one is an adult (18+), police will most likely advise you wait for 72 hours in hopes that your loved one returns.

During those initial 72 hours, you can call upon your community of supports to canvass and flyer your surrounding area or where your loved one was last seen. While canvassing, make sure to speak with nearby businesses, homeowners, and ask to see video footage that may have captured your loved one. Note all the names, addresses, and phone numbers of people you speak with who offer leads - when police officers contact you to support you with finding your loved one, you can share what you have gathered.

If someone declines to let you see video footage, note their name, address, phone number and provide this information to police who can work on acquiring the footage if they deem it relevant to the search for your loved one.

Get in touch with local media (news stations, newspapers, local leaders) and ask for their help in sharing your loved one's story. This helps ensure more people are on the lookout for your loved one.

What supports are available for my family?

Get in touch with local counseling resources and explain your situation. Often community agencies are eager to support and assist as best they can and will offer no-cost counseling services for families experiencing this crisis.

If you have children who are students in K-12 or college, reach out to their school and request supports for them. Schools may have on-site counselors or social workers that can provide emergency sessions that continue through the duration of the crisis.

Connect with your local leaders (area representative, city council members) to request their support. They may be able to provide you with flyering supplies, groceries, or household supplies.
